Fools and Foolishness
You may think of these words as negative or demeaning. Rude or unkind.... but really, it is what it is. Forest Gump said: "Stupid is as Stupid does". My daddy gave me my first version of The Good News Bible many years ago. This poor book (Bible) has been marked up, highlighted, torn, duck-taped, and been through the ringer. I love reading the Word and I like this translation/version (although I have MANY other Bibles). Many times throughout the Bible you will see the words stupid and fool. It is important to understand, the words are written NOT to offend the reader, but rather to inform, instruct and teach.
You know the saying: "Better to be thought a Fool, than to open your Mouth and Remove all Doubt". That statement used to crack me up when I would hear older folks say it. Once I discovered this statement is in the Bible (Proverbs 17:28), that made it even more funny to me! I just love the Book of Proverbs. So much Wisdom, Correction, and down-right, in- your- face Instruction.
We are taught in (James 1;19 - AMP), to be slow to take offense but always ready for reconciliation:
"Understand this, my beloved brothers and sisters. Let everyone be quick to hear [be a careful, thoughtful listener], slow to speak [a speaker of carefully chosen words and], slow to anger [patient, reflective, forgiving]"
As you continue your journey of bible-reading, bible-studying, bible-searching ---- Don't just read the easy stuff. Challenge yourself to learn about yourself (the ugly stuff). Learn how to make yourself the best version of Christ (Being Christ-like), letting His light shine in you so that others might see that He lives in and through you. You were created to worship Him and teach others about the goodness of Jesus and how they too can be saved. Don't hold on to anger. Proverbs 17:14 says " The start of an argument is like the first break in a dam; stop it before it goes any further." Why are you allowing arguments, disagreements, things people say - get to you so harshly? Choose your battles. Some stuff can just roll off your shoulders. Some stuff needs to be nipped in the bud. Whichever is necessary, do it...and be done with it! Do not rob yourself of the peace and joy God desires for your life by always blowing things out of proportion. The Lord is your strong tower - you can go to Him and be safe. He will take care of the Evil-doer. You don't have to worry yourself. We all make mistakes - admit yours and move on. God looks at your heart (your intent). We need to extend the same courtesy (grace) to our brothers and sisters. Forgive and move on.
Remain and seek after humility. Learn to apologize (with sincerity) and move on. Pride leads to destruction. It can be your downfall. Proverbs 16 says "pay attention to what you are taught and you will be successful; trust in the Lord and you will be happy (vs 20); Wisdom is a fountain of life to the wise, but trying to educate a fool is a waste of time (vs 22); Respectful people do not tell lies. and fools have nothing worthwhile to say (17:7); It does a fool no good to spend money on education, because he has no common sense (vs 16); Intelligent people are always eager and ready to learn (18;15).
Praise God for His instruction. Thy Word is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our pathways (Psalms 119;105). Let us seek after wisdom and behaviors that are pleasing to God and helpful to others.
