The Greatest Love of All By Thomas Hundley
Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. (Proverbs 22:6)
Do you know what the greatest love of all is? In the early 90’s, Whitney Houston recorded a popular song entitled, “The Greatest Love of All.” This song reached into my very soul. My Christian mind instantly began to extract God’s embedded message from the lyrics. Some of the most compelling lyrics were as follows:
I believe that children are our future. Teach them well and let them lead the way Show them all the beauty they possess inside. Give them a sense of pride to make it easier Let the children’s laughter remind us how we used to be….Because the greatest love of all is happening to me. I found the greatest love of all inside of me. The greatest love of all is easy to achieve; Learning to love yourself, it is the greatest love of all.
The obvious message from the title of this song is that God provides us with the greatest love of all in His Son Jesus. But, there is a question that this song begs of all of us: What are you teaching your children? Growing up in the South, my mother forced me to attend church service almost every night of the week. If the church doors opened, we had our behinds in the pews. Being an energetic young athlete, sitting in church every day kind of cramped my style. Instead of paying attention, I would lose myself in athletic thoughts. That means I would day dream. But, being the all-wise mother she was, my mother caught on to my ways. So, after church, she would quiz me on what I learned from the service. Uhh Ohh! Now I had to start paying attention. But as I started listening, I started learning. As I opened my ears, my mind and heart followed. As I left my mother’s home to attend college, I was convinced that everyday church was out. I was free to make my own decisions. Sure, I fell off the path and skipped a few Sundays (okay a lot of Sundays), but those lessons my mother taught me as a child brought me back to Christ. Now, I serve God as a teacher of the gospel. So, I ask you, “What are you teaching your children?”
Just like Whitney Houston, I also believe that children are our future. But today, we are failing to teach them about the importance of health and fitness. The simple truth is this: if we continue to allow them to eat poorly and remain inactive, we will bear the responsibility of decreasing their days on earth. We can no longer afford to fail our children. Our job is to instill the love of God inside their hearts and point them in the right direction. By doing so, we will give them the Greatest Love of All! Can I Get an Amen?
